Dr Richard Wright, GHT lead for N Tandridge has been working with partners in Surrey Heartlands and the wider system to help ensure that the Westway Community Centre remains open. With the help of Caterham on the Hill Parish, Whyteleafe Village, Tandridge and Surrey County Councils, The Westway have been able to arrange to stay open 7 days a week providing a warm welcome and a warm space for people to watch TV, have a chat, grab a hot drink or a snack – and hopefully save a bit on fuel costs at home. Open now and will run through until March 23. This enables the many wellbeing classes that take place there to continue. Take a look at their Facebook page for the latest activities and ‘What’s On’ at the Westway.
We supported the introduction of the below activity sessions in the last 6 months:
July saw the launch of Tai Chi classes for patients with Parkinson’s Disease in collaboration with the Westway; this has proved so popular that the timing has now been adjusted to ensure more space is available.
A new seated based exercise activity called ‘Wobble!’ has been developed through the Westway Community Hub; it is really growing in popularity with older, frailer and more sedentary people – we are also seeing people returning to exercise after injury or operation using these sessions because they are seated. Have a read of what takes place at this wonderful seated based exercise which benefits attendees both physically and mentally.
A brilliant creative project called ‘Let’s create’ has grown to be extremely popular! This was a project which was pump-primed with a small councillor grant. These monthly sessions are held at The Westway for people with a learning disability, their friends and the wider community to take part in drama, arts and dance and has been a huge success. This helps with social isolation and weight management, as these areas are really difficult for this group and the project aims to address them with an hours’ dance class, social time, singing and stretch exercises, and much more! The project has been really successful to date and attracts around 30 people – it has real potential to grow!
